   AS-interface System Description

Click on Controller for Press Release

AS-interface (commonly referred to as AS-I) is a low-level I/O system. It was originally intended to be a simple, low cost system that would be easy to install and maintain. With that philosophy in mind, the original developers designed AS-I as a discrete-only two wire system. It incorporated features like automatic station addressing, and power and data were carried on a single untwisted pair of wires.

Today. AS-I can be used as a stand alone network or can be connected to a higher level system, such as DeviceNet, or Profibus-DP, through a gateway. The gateway acts as a slave to the higher system and a master to the AS-I system.

Banner's R58A Registration Mark Sensors Provide Easy-to-Use, Low-Cost Registration Mark Detection

Minneapolis, MN—October 21, 2009—Banner Engineering Corp. introduces their R58A Series Registration Mark Sensors for detecting registration marks in printing and material registration applications often found in the web printing, product packaging and pharmaceutical industries.

The R58A features simplified setup via potentiometer adjustment of the switching threshold and switch-selectable light/dark operate. The sensor's short warm-up period, fast 10 kHz switching frequency and 15-microsecond repeatability ensure reliable detection in high-speed printing and web processing applications, where timing is critical.

Unmanaged Switches for Extreme Conditions

Phoenix Contact Industrial Ethernet Switches

Phoenix Contact's new SFNT unmanaged switches operate across a wide temperature range, making them suitable for harsh environments.  The switches are the latest addition to the Standard Function Narrow (SFN) line of unmanaged switches.

The SFNT switches can operate between -40 and 75 degrees Celsius. They also meet the increased noise immunity, shock and vibration standards necessary to operate in extreme environments.

Five- and eight-port versions are available for 10/100 mbps, as well as multimode fiber with SC and ST connections.  Like the original SFN, The SFNT's narrow housing makes it suitable for control cabinets and junction boxes. The switches support Layer 1 port locks and cable locks and can process and prioritize Quality of Service messages.

Solar System Surge Protection

Phoenix Contact Announces Surge Protection for Solar Systems

Phoenix Contact now offers pre-assembled surge protection sets for the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry.

The surge arresters in the PV sets have temperature-monitored, high-capacity varistors with optical fault warning and dynamic disconnect device. The PV sets are pre-assembled protection solutions in IP65 installation housing.

The PV-SET DC and PV-SET Multistring offer surge protection on the PV generator side only. They are designed for small-scale systems with a solar string or PV systems with several solar strings.

PV-SET DC/AC protects all power lines in the system, including both the PV generator side and the power supply. It provides optimum protection to an inverter, since the pre-assembled solution protects the DC input and the AC outputs from surge voltages.

Turck Intrinsic Safety Products

New MZB Series Barrier

The Turck MZB series of barriers are based on a simple principle. Each channel is fitted with two stages of pulse tested Zener Diodes and an infallible  terminating resistor. In the event of an electrical fault in the non-hazardous (controls side) of the barrier, such as an overvoltage, the Zener diodes limit the voltage available to the hazardous area circuits and a series resistance limits the current. There is also a fuse designed into the circuit that will rupture in the event of a continuous applicationof excess energy being applied to the barrier that is outside the design criteria for the loop.
